Another of the many characters in Jacksonville arrived around 1970 or 71 and was Don Buck. At first he was the typical big guy who probably played football in high school and had been quite fit until embarking on a career that largely involved sitting in a chair.
We ragged a lot on Irene, the manager of the café, but the fact of the matter was one could easily overdo it with the menu that was offered. I put on my freshman fifteen the first year I was there. Don kept going, though, and by the time most of my peers parted ways in '81, he was huge. The wags tagged him “The Incredible Bulk” (a play on a popular superhero TV show then running).
